An Unlikely Pouch

This project was meant to be a practice in double knitting while traveling. I was on a church trip to California a few years ago and needed to keep my hands occupied while flying. Travel knitting is actually one of my favorite types of knitting.

The pouch itself was worked up in double knitting rather than in the round. I wanted a flat bottom for it, rather than a point, and thought double knitting would be the best way to achieve this. In order to create the holes for the cord to tie it shut I knitted two together then yarned over. Afterwards, I transitioned to double pointed needles and bound off like I would a regular beanie. The beauty of double knitting is that it creates two fabrics and leaves a space in between them.

The cord itself is a simple barrel lanyard. That took the longest to make. I underestimated the initial length of yarn I’d need for it and ended up grafting in new lengths of yarn to finish it. Overall, I’m very happy with how this piece came out. It’s been a very useful pouch to have.
